Cohesive Therapy for Children with Special Needs

I found an exciting center of therapy for children with special needs. The Connections Therapy Center provides access to occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech and language pathologists, and they offer applied behavior analyses all in one center. All of the therapists work together for a cohesive therapy program. I find this center interesting because most centers focus on one thing, such as just multiple physical therapists working together, but instead the Connections Therapy Center provides one location for all of the needs of these children. The staff lives by the idea that therapy should be fun instead of the children feeling like they're working. This allows parents to receive the best care for their child. All the staff discusses the individual children to provide the best program for each child, focusing on what each specific child needs to succeed.

Another great feature the Connections Therapy Center offers is help with dealing with insurance companies and making sure their clients have full coverage through insurance or the best that they can do. It is great to see therapists coming together to even help with the business aspect of dealing with the insurance companies. The Connections Therapy Center has two current locations, one in Washington, D.C. and Lanham, MD. They are hoping to open more centers. I would love to be a physical therapist working in one of Connections Therapy Centers or create a center like this one back in my home state of Maine.

  1. Great! It's great to see integrated approaches like this taking off. And great to think that if you ever work at a place where their approach is more singular, you could be the one to advocate for the addition of more diverse programs to help increase the perspectives and move your own organization towards a more holistic approach. Exciting!

  2. It's really crazy how much is applied to different therapies. This is super interesting and it's great that it focuses on kids with special needs. I would love to see more on this sometime. I think it's great to know a few types of therapies in order to give a patient/client the best service one can provide!

  3. You're totally right Treen! Its rare nowadays to see places that offer a financial and insurance savvy staff. A lot of the time, especially lately I've noticed that physicians as well as really anywhere that requires insurance, will ask you to contact the insurance companies yourself. This can be such a hassle, I'm glad at least this facility is taking a step in the right direction.

  4. Hi, Catrina. I think Connections Therapy Center reflects the idea of multidisciplinary approaches on supporting children. I realize how the special education became popular and well recognized to the public over last few decades in the United States. Since educators considered children’s psychological disorder such as obsessive compulsive disorder, depression, anxiety, panic attacks and ADHD should be supported for their learning efficiency, various therapies became options and expanded to access the children’s needs. I think that children who are diagnosed with special needs have their difficulties which are correlated with other learning domains which are that some children could have complex disorders. Therefore, having several therapists who integrate their ideas and give best options to parents is the best for the children who need support.

  5. The Connections Therapy Center seems like it is a very well rounded and beneficial center for children. I think having therapists from different fields work together towards a common goal is so important for children with special needs. Having various specialists all in one center is such a great thing. Not only are they all working towards the same goal for the child, but it is so convenient for the child and their family. As a parent, I can imagine that it can be overwhelming seeking out physicians and specialists from different fields. I feel that this kind of center must put a parent or guardian's mind at ease. Additionally, the center's involvement with the insurance end of things is amazing. That is often a burden on families and to have assistance right there for them I can imagine is extremely beneficial. I think this kind of center is definitely one you should strive to work in or establish because so many children can benefit from this.
